The plan

Provisional itinerary

The provisional itinerary looks like a long south-southwest diagonal from Djibouti to Cape Town, travelling across the following countries:
  1. Ethiopia,
  2. Kenya,
  3. Tanzania,
  4. Malawi,
  5. Zambia,
  6. Botswana,
  7. Namibia,
  8. South Africa.

This represents some 10,000 km if we were to not branch out and explore. But of course we will; it will be interesting to see what the actual track looks like! It may well be that we want to linger more in some places and move faster in others, or visit adjacent countries (e.g. Uganda, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, etc.). We intend to depart with a comprehensive list of places to visit, recommended camping spots, good places to stay and so on, but will leave the door open to serendipity as well.

Trial phase in Oman

Our initial intention was to start the trip from the Sultanate of Oman, where we reside prior to the trip. This would have involved driving through the UAE, Saudi Arabia and crossing over to Sudan by ferry. However the situation in Sudan kept deteriorating, and we preferred skipping that part of the journey by shipping Mr. Fogg to Djibouti and begin our journey there.

After completion, Mr. Fogg was driven to Antwerp and into a ro-ro bound to Oman. It arrived four weeks later, delivered at Port Sultan Qaboos without a scratch. We used it extensively during week-ends and short holidays, which allowed us to test it thoroughly and have fun in the same time.
